Dear City of San Diego Planners,

I am stunned and deeply disappointed that the planning concepts being studied would result in a drastic net loss of affordable campsites and would unnecessarily reduce waterfront camping access and campground recreation amenities for northeast Mission Bay. At a time when the need for more affordable coastal accommodations in San Diego is greater than ever, this is totally unacceptable! I request an alternative be studied that retains the 820 affordable campsites that exist today in the project area being studied.

In particular, the City’s proposed redevelopment would reduce the existing 820 campsites in northeast Mission Bay to 500 or less – cutting camping by 40% or more! This would leave no room for the numerous amenities and facilities that help make Campland on the Bay such a unique and rewarding experience for families on a budget. In doing so, the overwhelming public support for more waterfront camping and recreation has been ignored and our coastline could become less accessible for everyday San Diegans.

I, along with countless others who have weighed in, again urge the City to remember:

1. Campland on the Bay must be preserved! Campland has played a critical role in the success of Mission Bay for 50 years. Campland is a beloved, family-friendly destination and important community asset that should be preserved for generations to come.
2. NO net loss of campsites in northeast Mission Bay! The City must maintain or increase the existing 820 campsites in northeast Mission Bay, while preserving the campground recreation amenities enjoyed by so many families.
3. More waterfront camping is needed! If the City moves Campland to De Anza, it’s critical to preserve the same number of campsites directly overlooking the beach and bay that exist today. Camping should be located farther onto the De Anza peninsula to reutilize the direct beachfront and bay access that already exists and is ideal for camping.

I urge you to please incorporate this feedback and study an alternative that would result in no net loss of camping. Thank you!
