PROTECT CAMPING ON MISSION BAY

Welcome to Friends of Campland,

Our goal is to make sure affordable waterfront camping is offered along the shores of Mission Bay.  The City of San Diego is working on a redevelopment plan for De Anza Cove and the Mission Bay Park master plan.  There are organizations supporting other plans which will eliminate waterfront camping.  If you support the need to keep waterfront camping as part of the master plan, please join Friends of Campland today.

Your Support Made a Difference!

Thank you! Because of your support, progress was made at the San Diego Environment Committee meeting on March 14, 2024.

  1. Boating: After hearing your concerns, the City requested a study be done to determine whether motorized boating limitations in northeast Mission Bay are necessary instead of moving forward with an outright ban. We will keep you posted on the study’s progress and opportunities for the public to weigh in on this important issue!
  2. Interim Access to Affordable Accommodations: At the hearing, City Councilmembers directed staff to clarify that the City will work with existing lessees to ensure continued uses, like affordable accommodations, stay in place until the City is ready to implement its plans and put shovels in the ground. However, more advocacy may be needed at the final City Council hearing (expected later this year) to ensure no interruptions in public camping access before then.

These are very positive developments as Campland on the Bay, Mission Bay RV Resort, the Campland Marina and Adventure Watersports, as well as the current recreational uses (Mission Bay Golf Course, Mission Bay Boat & Ski Club, Pacific Beach Tennis Club, and Jim McAvoy fields and their youth sports programs) are likely to remain in place for years to come while this plan goes through the development planning, permitting and funding process.

Thanks again for your support! Your voices are being heard, and these considerations were made because of your outreach!

Here’s an San Diego Union Tribune article summarizing the meeting.

Why is this important?

Can you imagine a day when there is no camping on Mission Bay?

We can’t. Campland on the Bay must be preserved! Campland has played a critical role in the success of Mission Bay for 50 years. Campland is a beloved, family-friendly destination and important community asset that should be preserved for generations to come.

Friends of Campland (FOC) is a group of campers, San Diego residents and families that have joined together to help save Campland on the Bay and access to waterfront camping on Mission Bay that the City wants to reshape.

Show your support for continued waterfront camping on Mission Bay. Preserving the level of RV and tent camping spaces that exist today is crucial to meeting public demand for camping in this cherished area.
