The City of San Diego City Council approved the De Anza Natural plan for NE Mission Bay May 14, 2024!
While not perfect, the plan preserves the most camping and recreation of any other alternative under consideration. Still, there are groups who want to remove camping from the shoreline and motorized boating altogether at De Anza – so we need to continue to speak up and fight for the De Anza Natural plan as the most balanced option. The City did agree to two important points:
- Current Lessees, including Campland and Mission Bay RV Resort, can continue operations until the shovels are ready to hit the ground with permits and financing is in place to construct the marsh and other components of the plan.
- They will study whether a motorized boating ban in Northeast Mission Bay is needed to protect the marshland and environment.
The De Anza Natural plan will be submitted to the California Coastal Commission for approval. The Fish & Wildlife Agency will also review the plan. Read the San Diego Union-Tribune article summarizing the meeting. These are just some of the upcoming hurdles to execute the plan. Funding for the plan, including the demolition and removal of Campland on the Bay’s infrastructure and over 1200 mature trees to turn the area into marshland, will be a very costly endeavor with estimates nearing $1 billion.
Thank you to everyone who attended the meeting or sent in a letter! Your support was critical to getting points 1 & 2 listed above into the plan.
